The Chair Speaks

BISHOP CAROLYN TYLER-GUIDRY
I really like “new beginnings!” You know; like a new year, or a new job, or communion Sunday, or a new conference year, or an organization’s election of new officers!

In the Connectional Ministers Spouses and Widows and Widowers Organization Plus P.K’s we have a new beginning! We congratulate and welcome our new president, Sister Fredia Hanley-Johnson. We congratulate the new and returning officers! We have a new beginning!

New beginnings are opportunities to reflect on the path that has led us to this point in time. We can evaluate our work and make determinations concerning our progress to this point. We can ask ourselves, have we come close to achieving the goals for which we were organized? Have we remained true to our purpose? Whatever the answers may be, we have an opportunity to “begin again.” We can now set new goals. The officers, when installed, promised to do their best for CONN-M-SWAWO + P. K’s. So this new beginning will be an opportunity to do better in the future than we did in the past.

Make no mistake, the founders, Dr. Dorothy and Rev. John Q. Owens, laid a solid foundation, and the administration of the last eight years, led by Sister Ora Easley, have left us with “high marks” to reach. P.K’s have received scholarships to aid them with their education; clergy families now are able to immediately know if there are concerns for which we need to pray, and send messages of comfort; twice each year officers and members come together to worship and share in forums that speak to the unique issues of clergy families. Yes, CONN-M-SWAWO + P.K’S have come a long way! It is a “new beginning.” Therefore, the new leadership will take stock of where we are, and will chart the course for where we go from here. New beginnings mean new ideas; new ways to accomplish goals; new people sharing gifts and talents; new prayers being lifted, and the God who never changes being honored in all that we do!

Supervisor Don and I are proud to be a part of this wonderful organization:

CONN-M-SWAWO+PK’S - a network/support system for those families who serve the church in the preaching / pastoral ministry.

Greetings From Dr. John Q. Owens, Director of Social Action . . .

drowens.gif (15850 bytes)The plight, ploys and pressures of the clergy family have in recent years come to fore. Suffering in silence, as was the case with most of us, was replaced by a few religious revolutionaries in our Zion who stepped out in faith and hope in 1989.  Trusting that like-minded clergy family members would be drawn to the forefront of the struggle to; "protect our image, press our claim; and promote the clergy family's spiritual and social agenda".

The need for the Connectional Ministers' Spouses, Widows and Widowers Organization Plus P.K.'s is accelerated today by events in the secular society which show the decline in morality, patience and peace; all of which impact the prestige, and the respect of the clergy family.  Through deliberate execution and design, the Clergy Family Forum addresses these issues.

And all clergy families need unity!  The mood of the culture and the mold of civilization all dictate the need for awareness, a readiness and a preparedness to nurture and encourage each other at every turn; and this is the Mission thrust of      CONN-M-SWAWO Plus P.K.'s.

For we must feed the inner man;
so that we can focus on the outer man;
which will help us to fellowship the other man
!

As the organization celebrates its First Decade Anniversary, my hope and my prayer is that more clergy spouses, widows, widowers, and P.K.s will join and bring with them more insight and energy.

I trust that the higher power that called and loves us all, will continue to bless, feed and sanction this effort.  With Him, our future is in good hands!

God Be With Us All!
Dr. John Q. Owens

The Presidents Speaks . . .

“The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and many parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.”

1stCorinthians 12: 12, 26-27 (NIV)

These words clearly speak to us regarding the bonds of unity and we welcome you to our web site for the Connectional Ministers’ Spouses, Widows and Widowers Organization Plus PK’s of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

It is an honor and a privilege to serve as the 3rd Elected President of this wonderful Organization.  I remain prayerful about the responsibility that is placed before me and am thankful to God for the opportunity to be of service to the Clergy Families within our Zion.

As we begin our journey together, let us thank Him for the vision of this ministry and initial planting by our founder, Dr. Dorothy Owens and for the abundant blessings given to us through the leadership of our Immediate Past President, Mrs. Ora L. Easley.

All of us as Clergy Spouses, (whether classified as active, retired, widowed, male or female), have at some point struggled between being personally fulfilled and being of service to others - all while continuing to plant and cultivate seeds into our families and our congregations. As a result, we sometimes do not “Live Well, Everyday”, often neglect ourselves physically and/or emotionally or fail to see the need for seeds to be planted and cultivated into our lives. This is when Conn-M-SWAWO Plus PK’s can be of service to you.

It is our goal that Conn-M-SWAWO Plus Pk’s will continue to be that vehicle which addresses the issues and needs of our membership through the planting and cultivation of NEW SEEDS which will concentrate on Support, Education, Empowerment, Definition of Roles, and Service to others and with God’s help we will continue with our original mission of strengthening the Minister’s Spouse, nurturing the PK’s, caring for our retired Spouses, Widows and Widowers and being of service to others.

On behalf of the Officers and Members of Conn-M-SWAWO Plus PK’s, we thank you for visiting us. We hope that your visit to our web site has been meaningful and encourage you to become a member of the Connectional Ministers’ Spouses, Widows and Widowers Organization Plus PK’s - a support Ministry for Clergy Families in the African Methodist Episcopal Church.

In Service for Him,
Mrs. Fredia A. Hanley-Johnson (2005-2009)
